Together, we float to the surface, still intertwined.  We break through the top and I suck in a breath and Dare is staring into my eyes.

There’s tension here, but not the bad kind.  It’s the kind that ignites you, the kind that intoxicates you, the kind that once you taste it, you’ll crave for the rest of your life.

I’ve forgotten that I was going to be careful, that I was going to reject him on every level.

All I can remember, all I can focus on, is how veryalive Dare DuBray is making me feel in this moment, how alive he always makes me feel.

For a girl who has been surrounded by death her entire life, this is a very big deal.

“I’m a little afraid of you,” I blurt honestly, and Dare still has his arms around me.  Our treading water motions keep our legs rubbing together, the friction still there.

Hot,

Hot,

Hotter.

Dare smiles, but there is no humor in it.

“Good.”

“Why?”

My honesty makes me seem innocent, but I don’t know how to play games.  I have no experience with the opposite sex at all.

“Because that makes you feel something.”

But he’s hesitant now and he looks away. There’s something he wants to say, it’s balanced on the tip of his tongue, but he swallows it.

“What is it?” I ask softly.  “Just tell me.”

He wants to, I can tell. His secrets are killing him. He just wants to be normal, he’s just acting out a role.

I don’t know why I feel like I know this.  It’s just there, suddenly resting on my heart.

“You don’t have to be someone you’re not,” I murmur quietly.  His dark eyes snap up to mine and he pulls his hands away. There’s something in his eyes now, something guarded, and our easy afternoon has come to an end.

“What makes you think I am?” he snaps. “Pretending to be something I’m not, I mean.”

I’ve somehow annoyed him, and I don’t answer because I don’t know what to say.

“I’m not being someone I’m not, Calla,” he says coolly as he strides from the water.  “I’m being who you need me to be.”

I’m utterly confused, and I’m dripping wet.

“We don’t have towels,” is all he says when I follow him. My clothing soaks up the water and it is a very cold ride back home.

Dare doesn’t say another word and I leave him in the garage.

I don’t see him at dinner, and I don’t see him the rest of the night.

But as I lay in bed around midnight, I see his car leave the garage.

I don’t see him come home, and I’m awake for half the night waiting.

I have no idea where he goes when he slips away.

Somehow, I think he wants it that way.

There’s a fork in the road and even though I see it, I can’t avoid it.

One road goes left, one goes right, and neither of them end well.

I feel it in my bones,

In my bones,

In my bones.

I sing a song of nonsense, and it sings back.  The notes echo and twist in the air, and I swallow them whole.

“Come out,” I call behind me, because I know they’re there.

I can’t see them, but they’re always watching.

Eyes appear, blood red, and they blink once, twice, three times.

“I can see you,” I announce and there’s a growl and then I’m crushed beneath the dark, beneath the weight, beneath the oppression.

“You don’t scare me,” I lie.

There’s savagery here, there’s grace.

But above all, there’s oblivion and no matter what I do, I will be sucked into it.

I know it.

I feel it.

I’m crazy.

And it doesn’t matter.

I’m the rabbitrabbitrabbit and I’ll never be free.

Reynolds Carter is a 40-year-old hot Hollywood a-list actor who finds out his starlet girlfriend cheated on him. He is sick and tired of his fast, fake and empty Hollywood existence. After doing some soul searching, Reynolds decides to write a screen play about health care do-gooder Jack Atwater. Liz Atwater is a widower and a typical suburban mom.  It’s only been a year since Jack was murdered and Liz is still in mourning, but she’s wildly attracted to Reynolds.  Reynolds doesn’t like kids (Liz has three) and usually dates hot models and actresses. Reynolds and Liz’ undeniable chemistry could light up the Hollywood sign.  Can they find love or will former ghosts of the past stop them from finding their own heaven?

Past Heaven is a nice celebrity/normal girl story. It did take me a little while to get into this book while learning Jack’s story. Past Heaven isn’t a smutastic read…but had the right amount of heat. Reynolds is wayyyy too perfect... like crazy perfect. Liz was great, relatable and very real. The Hollywood sticky-sweet ending went down as I anticipated.  Great book.

• Past Heaven is an endearment my husband told me when we fell in love. That we found a love that was “past heaven.”
• My father helped to shut down the last state-run institution for people with disabilities in Maryland. He is my inspiration behind Jack Atwater’s character.
• My brother has developmental disabilities and when he was born, doctors told my parents he should be institutionalized. They disagreed and moved across the country to find a school that would accept him. Today he is married to a woman with Down syndrome, lives in a home with his wife, and works a full time job.
• Jacksonville, Maryland is the setting for the majority of Past Heaven. This is where I live and Hydes Field, Bagelemeister, and Strapasta are all places my family frequents. My kids also attend the local elementary school like Liz’s children.
• My favorite restaurant is Woodberry Kitchen, where Liz and Reynolds have their celebratory dinner!
• The Warren agency, written about in the book as the place where Jack worked, is modeled after the ARC Baltimore, an agency that provides services to my brother and countless other individuals with developmental disabilities.

Eight weeks ago I signed a contract.  One that seemed like a good idea at the time.  A handsome bachelor, luxury accommodations, and a chance to win a prize my family desperately needed.  There were some rules though.  Lots of them actually.  Follow the script, no dating, sex, or disclosing the terms of the deal.  After my self-imposed moratorium on men the last year, it wouldn’t be hard to live up to my end of the bargain…so I thought.  Until I realized the deal I’d made was with the devil…and I was in love with his dirty-talking brother.

Excerpt

Every girl needs three things
 1.  A flutter in her belly when she meets him for the first time.
 Meet Cooper
 My lips brush the top of her hand lightly, my tongue sneaking out to fleetingly touch her skin.  The brief contact stirs an ache inside me.  This woman tugs at something—more than arousal—something that makes me want to slow down time just to spend a few more minutes standing here.
“Did you just…” she stammers a bit.
“Did I just what?”
She squints at me.  “You know.”
“Do I?”
“I felt your tongue on my hand.  You…you licked me.”
I’d been dying to run my tongue along her neck all evening, although I hadn’t really meant to be so crude about it.  It just sort of …happened.  “I wouldn’t say licked, maybe just a little taste.”
“So you tasted me?”
My entire body suddenly has interest in this conversation.  “I suppose I did.  But it wasn’t nearly enough.  That brings us back to my invitation for dinner.  Tomorrow night?”
“I can’t.”
“The day after then?”
She laughs and shakes her head.  The sound makes me smile.
“Good night, Cooper.”  She pulls the driver’s side door shut and leaves me standing there…for a full five minutes after she’s gone.

2.  A best friend to talk about him to.
 Meet Sadie

“And?”
“And I kissed him when we were in his office.”
“How was his office?”
“Really?  That’s what you want to know.  Not how was the kiss or aren’t you in breach of your contract?  How was his office?”
“You can tell a lot about a man by his office.”
I gulp another unladylike sip from my wine glass.  “His office was beautiful.  Sleek, overlooking the city.  It oozed power.”
“Nice.  Bet he fucks like he owns you.”
The thought of what he’s like in bed is enough to make me lose my train of thought.
“Go on,” Sadie prods.
I don’t continue immediately.
“You forgot what you were up to because you were thinking of him fucking you like he owns you, didn’t you?”  My best friend smirks knowingly.
“Shut up.”  I pause.  “Anyway, I don’t know what I’m going to do.”
“Well, him.  Obviously.”
“I wish it were that easy.”

3.  A gentleman that turns into a bossy dirty talker in the bedroom.
Cooper – behind closed doors.

“You haven’t even begun to see bossy yet.  Tonight I’m going to tell you to do things, and you’re going to do them.  When I tell you to open wider, or take my cock deeper, you’re going to listen.  You know why?  Because since the moment we met, all I’ve wanted to do is make you feel good.  Hell, I don’t even need to get off physically.  Because I’m going to get off watching you every minute.  So, yeah, I’m going to be bossy.  Now let’s put the rest of this behind us.  Do you want to be with me tonight?”
After that prelude, I nod my head fast.  I’m no fool.  Who wouldn’t?

Did you ever think about why people go on TV shows like The Bachelor? Are they really looking for love or do they have another agenda?

Kate is a gambling woman and betting that she can win the Throb bachelor show to have enough money to help her family. The night before she's set to go back on the show set, she meets Cooper.  The problem is that this hot bachelor isn’t on the show. If Kate wants to win, she has to abide by the shows rules:

No dating.

No sex outside of the game.

No disclosing the terms of the contract.

Cooper is a dirty talking studio executive who falls for the bachelorette.  Kate is falling for Cooper, but she knows that she is on this show for a reason and she doesn't want to jeopardize her chance at winning. While she has incredible chemistry with her off-screen bachelor, she is also rocking some on-screen chemistry with the show's resident heartthrob, rock star bachelor. Lust, lies, jealousy, cat fights and sex are scripted on and off camera.  Who is going to walk away the real winner?

I loved this sexy and sweet story.  Vi always has a way of creating likable characters and engaging plot lines.  This unique made for TV romance was seriously HOT. Kate and Cooper’s reality show love story unfolded in such an enjoyable way...making me feel like I was a fly on the wall behind the scenes of this show.   I also loved the great “supporting cast" of characters including Kate’s best friend and the bachelor himself.  Once again Vi managed to fog up my Kindle screen with another smoking blistering hot book. Throb ends with a great HEA and no cliffhanger.  Go one click this one.

“I need to talk to you about the work situation,” he says as he follows me out. “I got the contract, but I want to make sure you’re okay with this before I sign it.”

“You want to know if I’ll be okay working with you?”

I slide the key into the doorknob and Houston places his hand over mine to stop me from turning the

knob. “I can’t go in there with you. Please stay out here until we’re done talking.”

I shake his hand off and turn around to face him. “There’s nothing to talk about. You have to sign the
contract. The way I feel about working with you shouldn’t matter.”

“But it does matter. I don’t want to upset you. You were there first.”

I can’t help but laugh. “So this is a territorial thing? You think because I was there first that I have some sort of right to keep you out?” His left eyebrow shoots up the way it always does when he’s confused and it nearly renders me mute. “Houston, if I didn’t work there you wouldn’t think twice about signing that contract. So that’s what you should do. Just… please stop making this into something it isn’t. We hardly know each other anymore, and that’s the way it’s going to remain.”

He swallows hard as he lets this sink in. “I guess you’re right. I’m sorry I bothered you. I only wanted to… Never mind. I’ll get going. I have to get up early to go sign that contract. Not that you care.”

He shakes his head in disappointment as he walks away and I’m glad I don’t have anything solid in my hand other than Skippy’s leash or I might throw it at the back of his head. So I’m the one who doesn’t care? Ugh. Typical Houston and his endless psychological games.

Maybe I should have told him to walk away from the contract, but that would have meant admitting that he still has a strong hold over me. It also would have been the truth and the truth has never gotten me in trouble. In fact, the truth is something my previous relationship with Houston was sorely lacking. Nevertheless, I don’t need to right the wrongs we made while we were together. I don’t need to tell Houston that the sight of him makes my throat dry and my stomach flutter. He doesn’t need to know that I still go to sleep with scenes from our life together playing on repeat in my mind. Or that sometimes I wake up with his name tumbling from my lips, the remnants of dreams where he never left and nightmares where he hovers just out of reach.

Before Wednesday, the last time I had seen Houston was the day after he met me at the Planned
Parenthood clinic. I didn’t ask him to come, and I don’t know how he found the date and time of my
appointment, but he was there when we pulled into the parking lot. Lisa, a girl from my Social Inequality class whom I’d had coffee with a couple of times, had graciously agreed to take me to the clinic. The moment I saw him leaning against his truck, I knew I had to send Lisa home. Houston would insist on taking me back to the apartment after the procedure, to watch over me.

It was the last thing I wanted, to have Houston doting over me after terminating the pregnancy. But it
was also the only thing I wanted. It was as if he was performing the last rites on our dead relationship.

The night before she's set to go back on the show set, she meets Cooper.  The problem is that this hot bachelor isn’t on the show. If Kate wants to win, she has to abide by the shows rules:

No dating.

No sex outside of the game.

No disclosing the terms of the contract.

Cooper is a dirty talking studio executive who falls for the bachelorette.  Kate is falling for Cooper, but she knows that she is on this show for a reason and she doesn't want to jeopardize her chance at winning. While she has incredible chemistry with her off-screen bachelor, she is also rocking some on-screen chemistry with the show's resident heartthrob, rock star bachelor. Lust, lies, jealousy, cat fights and sex are scripted on and off camera.  Who is going to walk away the real winner?

I loved this sexy and sweet story.  Vi always has a way of creating likeable characters and engaging plot lines.  This unique made for TV romance was seriously HOT. Kate and Cooper’s reality show love story unfolded in such an enjoyable way...making me feel like I was a fly on the wall behind the scenes of this show.   I also loved the great “supporting cast" of characters including Kate’s best friend and the bachelor himself.  Once again Vi managed to fog up my Kindle screen with another smoking blistering hot book. Throb ends with a great HEA and no cliffhanger.  Go one click this one.
