Ethan Richards has fought depression and a host of other demons all his adult life, and it’s caused him to lose everything—his wife, his son, his friends, and he almost loses the one thing that means the most to him—his band. He hits rock bottom and believes there is no way out.

Enter Jenna McCormick, a feisty drug and alcohol counselor, a woman with her own share of troubles. She finds Ethan intriguing but keeps him at a distance while trying to help him face life without crutches. She feels a spark but denies it, knowing that a relationship with unstable Ethan could be dangerous for both of them.

Ethan knows what he wants, though, and isn’t used to being told no. Jenna isn’t willing to risk Ethan losing his tenuous grip on sobriety, however, and is prepared to deny her deeper feelings to help Ethan climb out of his hole, but he learns how to let go of his pain when he finds that someone is prepared to walk with him through the shadows. Can he convince Jenna that they should take a chance on love or will they forever deny their feelings in an effort to keep Ethan on the straight and narrow?

ARC kindly provided by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. Spoiler-free.  This book does not end with a cliffhanger. I recommend reading Bullet by Jade C. Jamison (book 1) before reading Rock Bottom…but this book can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone. 4.5 – 5.0 stars!

Ethan Richards is in one of the biggest rock bands of all time.  But the only thing “rock” about his life is the hard rock bottom he has hit.  Before he entered rehab (again) the only tracks he was laying were the tracks on his arms. Ethan has been on a downward spiral into a drug induced abyss. Everyone in his life became collateral damage in the wake of his drug fueled existence.  He almost killed his wife, who in turn took their toddler son and left him.  His band is exhausted of his erratic and dangerous behavior. Everyone gave up on the charismatic, smoldering hot, self-absorbed douche bag star rock…except for one. Jenna McCormick - his substance abuse counselor. Usually a therapist isn't supposed to cross the line and get involved with a patient.  Ethan meets Jenna his new substance abuse counselor and sparks fly. Jenna is full of her own dysfunctional demons.  She is doing her best to help herself and her groups’ members.  Then Ethan walks into her life. Can Jenna pull Ethan out of his depressed filled life before he hits six feet under? Will Jenna be able to help herself and help Ethan?

I loved the way Rock Bottom picked up where Bullet left off without missing a beat. This story unfolded from both Ethan’s and Jenna’s pov. I enjoyed their internal dialogue which captured all of their feelings, observations and emotions. In Rock Bottom, Ethan’s behavior is not justified but explained.  He wants to get better and feel well.  I believe Jade Jamison did her homework on depression and the hard realities of addition.  She exposed the very essence of the pain, heart break and aftermath that drug addiction and depression causes. Rock Bottom might be one of my favorite books by Jamison. I have to mention the great steam factor – dam this woman can write a hot scene! I think RB can be read as a stand-alone but to really understand Ethan’s past and understand the bigger picture I would recommend reading Bullet (Book 1). Rock on and enjoy. 4.5 – 5.0 Heavy Metal Stars.

I can’t believe it took me this long to read Shine Not Burn by Elle Casey. I wanted to read this book since it came out in July...but got side tracked. Luckily, I signed on to review SNB for a blog tour so I carved out the time to read it. This book was abso-effing-lutley perfect!

Andie has a life plan of making partner at her law firm, getting married and have 2.5 kids by the time she hits 35. Going away for a weekend of fun in Las Vegas shouldn’t interfere…right? Wrong. Just after arriving in Vegas her boyfriend Luke (known as Puke) breaks up with her via text message. She has a new plan…go out and have fun! Andie is double fisting cocktails like they are going out of style. While walking through a casino she spots the hottest guy she has ever seen. He has knock out ice blue eyes and wearing a sexy cowboy hat. As she makes her way over to where he is playing blackjack she trips and spills her drink on him. One thing leads to another and lady luck is on their side. They hook up and get married in an alcohol infused haze. Through a series of crazy circumstances they can’t get in touch the next day. Fast forward a few years later… Andie is sticking to her life plan. She is engaged to be married to some uber douche named Bradley. While applying for a wedding license she discovers that she was already hitched (it really wasn’t a dream). Yikes! She tracks down Mack. Giddy up, life just got very interesting in Baker City, Oregon.

I loved this book. It was a perfect mix of fun, steam, angst and romance. I have to say Andie’s internal dialogue was off the hook funny. I wasn’t into cowboys before Mack. Sign me up to go work on ranch with him ;) My only criticism of this amazing book is the cover does not do Mack justice. I would be happy to audition male models for a new cover…just sayin.

I decided to rescue my poor tipsy friend before she got too much dizzier trying to figure out what Candice was talking about. “Craps is a game, sweetie. Gambling. Where you throw the dice across the table and that guy has that hockey stick he uses to push and pull chips around? Like on TV where the guy’s on a roll making a bunch of money and everyone’s standing around cheering for him while he throws the dice?”
Seconds ticked by and then a virtual lightbulb went on over Kelly’s head. “Ooooohhh, you mean the gaaaame craps. That makes waaaay more sense. It’s true … you never say crap unless you’re around people you want to impress and then you say that word instead of saying shit.”
“No, I don’t,” said Candice, looking miffed or maybe a little embarrassed.
“Yes, you do,” said Kelly, completely oblivious to Candice’s mood change. “Okay, let’s play this crap thing. This crappy crapper craps game.” She giggled.
Candice rolled her eyes. “Do I want to get her another drink, Andie?”
“Yes and no,” I said. “Yes, because it’s her bachelorette party and yes we want her to get good and hungover later so she never forgets this trip and how much fun it is to be single … and no, because I hate it when people barf. It makes me barf when I see it. And if she drinks too much more…”
“…she’s gonna barf,” Candice finished for me.
“Exactly.”
“Waitress!” yelled Candice, running after a barmaid with a tray.
Kelly and I watched her go. “What’s she doing?” Kelly asked.
“Getting us drunk.”

Meet Elle & Nico
Elle on Nico
I’ve never seen a body like his so close before. It just doesn’t seem real. Both of his arms are covered in tattoos, it looks like he’s wearing colorful sleeves, only he has no shirt on. They intertwine and wrap around his bulging biceps and I get the urge to trace a path from the first splat of ink to the last with my tongue. My body’s reaction to him is unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. These aren’t feelings that I’m used to, they seem to come out of nowhere and are uncontrollable.
One side of his lip curls up slightly, as though he is amused at my staring. He hands me a glass of wine without asking if I want one and I take it because I need it to calm my nerves. I’m here staring at this bigger than life man, and suddenly I’m speechless. The wine can’t seep into my bloodstream quick enough. Half the glass is gone in one long, unladylike gulp.
“Thirsty?” I look up at him and find a glimmer of amusement in Nico’s eyes, mixed with something else. I think he knows I’m trying to calm myself and I fidget in my seat on the couch as he stands there looking so unaffected.

Nico on Elle
I’m up at five a.m. every morning. Well, every morning except today. I slept like shit, my body a mass of pent-up frustration. I kept my word all night. Even though all I wanted to do was pick her up, carry her into my bedroom, and ram myself into her to claim her as mine. Then she kissed me. I know I could have taken it further after that kiss. But I don’t want one night with Elle. I want more. I have no idea why, but I do. A lot fucking more.
By the time I drove back home last night, I’d gotten myself under control. I’d reasoned with my hard-on until it finally saw my way. Who knew you could reason with a fucking hard-on. I guess I never tried. I just took care of it, did what it wanted me to.
But then I walked into my loft and I smelled her. And all reasoning went out the window. I couldn’t sleep with a steel pipe in my pants, so I took a cold shower. It didn’t help. Then I was wide awake with a hard-on. I tossed and turned with a picture of Elle smiling at me in my head. Taunting me for being such a sap.
