Synopsis:

Everleigh Reichart and William Landry fell hard—and far too fast. Their weeklong romance ended the moment Will, a twenty-nine-year-old firefighter, learned the truth: Everleigh was seventeen. He walked away to protect them both. Destiny had other plans.

Eleven years later, Will is still running into burning buildings, while Everleigh has become a brilliant psychiatrist. When a house fire strands her on his land, their old feelings ignite like patient embers. But she’s desperate to keep concealing the childhood trauma that has shaped her life, and he’s struggling under the weight of his father’s terminal illness. Too soon, the strain snaps their fragile reunion, flinging them farther apart than ever before.

Now Everleigh must face her past to salvage a future with Will…if he can accept that loving her includes the broken parts too. But first, he needs to come and find her—this time by faith, not fate.

When the Smoke ClearsWhen the Smoke Clears by Jewel E. Ann
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When the Smoke Clears is the latest standalone in Jewel E. Ann’s From Nowhere series, and this book was heartbreakingly beautiful. Will, who we met in the previous books, finally gets his own story. You can absolutely read this book as a standalone, but do yourself a favor and check out the other books in the series.

I love flawed characters, and Everleigh might be one of Jewel’s most fascinating. She’s a child prodigy-turned-psychiatrist who fell hard for Will, a firefighter, when she was seventeen. Will thought she was older when they first met, and their budding romance ended up in flames.

Eleven years later, Everleigh is a brilliant psychiatrist who has never stopped loving him. She’s strong, complicated, a little odd, and completely unapologetic about who she is. I loved that about her. But underneath all of that brilliance is someone carrying the weight of a painful past. Will. Oh, Will. This man frustrated me at times, but he was dealing with his own emotional baggage. I wanted to hug him and shake him at the same time.

When the Smoke Clears was messy, complicated, emotional, and beautifully human. Jewel managed to break my heart and then slowly put it back together. She has a way of creating perfectly imperfect characters who always seem to get under my skin and stay there. One-click this one.

SYNOPSIS:

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward comes a new, STANDALONE contemporary romance…

The last thing Dorian Vanderbilt expected was to find me painting in my crop top when he returned to the mansion he hadn’t inhabited in years.

He was understandably surprised I’d turned his living room into an art space.

Life is certainly full of surprises, though, but not always in a good way.

I learned that lesson when my aunt and the billionaire she married died unexpectedly while traveling.

I’d been living with them, and just like that, my life was turned on its axis.

Unsure of what was next, I stayed alone at the barren estate figuring out my next move.

That was when Dorian—the late billionaire’s only son—showed up.

I’d never met Dorian Vanderbilt. He’d been living on the other side of the country.

But now, he was home, left to pick up the pieces of his father’s legacy.

Not only was Dorian devastatingly handsome and mysterious, but he was the sole heir to the Vanderbilt fortune.

He didn’t seem to like me—at first. We were total opposites. But I was grateful that at least he didn’t kick me out.

We stayed out of each other’s way for the most part, save for some late-night kitchen run-ins or unexpected bonding sessions in the home theater.

Over time, though, we grew closer. Turned out, our chemistry was pretty combustible.

I was falling in love with him.

Until everything I thought I knew turned upside down yet again.

And fate left me pining for the one man I’d ever loved.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Hands down, The House Guest by Penelope Ward is one of my top reads of the year. I finished it days ago, and I still can’t stop thinking about this book. This story wrecked me in the best way—full of emotion, angst, and unforgettable characters that burrowed straight into my heart and soul. It’s the kind of book that lingers, making you want to go back and reread just to feel it all over again. Truth be told, I’m completely obsessed.
