ABBY:

I’m falling for the father of the baby I’m carrying.

The problem is: it’s not my baby.

And the broody widower is not looking for a long-term partner.

As a surrogate, the deal was that I’d only be in England long enough to give birth.

At first, the man seemed as pretentious as his name: Sigmund Benedictus.

He and I butted heads.

Sig challenged my intentions, accused me of just wanting to do this for the money.

Gradually, he learned to trust me.

He even became protective.

Over time, our heated animosity turned into fiery chemistry.

I was falling in love with him.

But my time here had a limit.

I needed to protect my heart from the devastatingly gorgeous older man who’d end up breaking it.

SIG:

When my in-laws told me they wanted to use my dead wife’s eggs to conceive a grandchild, I wasn’t immediately on board.

They swore that on her deathbed Britney told them it was what she wanted—but only if I fathered the baby. Her parents insisted they would be the ones to raise it.

Against my better judgment, I agreed.

I vowed to keep my heart out of it, though.

I’d continue to pretend it wasn’t happening and live the empty, single life I’d become accustomed to the past five years since Britney died.

And despite the fact that a certain younger American named Abby Knickerbocker had awakened things inside me that I thought were long dead…

I most certainly wouldn’t fall in love with the surrogate.

The SurrogateThe Surrogate by Penelope Ward
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was up until 2 am reading The Surrogate by Penelope Ward. Hands down, The Surrogate is one of my top favorite reads from Penelope. Heck, this book is one of my top favorite books. Period. I imagine it's tough to write a book that meets readers' expectations after they fall in love with a special side character. Readers (including myself) begged Penelope to write Sig's story after he appeared in The Aristocrat, which was released in 2021. Sig and Abby's beautiful emotion-packed story is going to sucker punch you with the feels. Let me tell you that this book was worth the wait.

Not only did Penelope deliver another incredible standalone romance, but she also made it worth the wait for Sig's story. For Abby, creating the baby was easy; getting into Sig's heart was as easy as peeling the skin of an onion and not crying. Sig was such a complex and prickly character with a huge grief case of emotional baggage. Abby, his selfless surrogate, had a heart of pure golden sunshine—these two characters were total opposites of each other. Abby not only carried a baby, but she also brought a broken Sig back to life. The angst, the build-up, and that ending had me alternating between biting my nails and shedding a few tears. The Surrogate pulled on all of my heartstrings and didn't let go. Penelope ruined me for the next book I plan to read since I now have a book hangover to deal with. I didn't know where this story would go, and I let Penelope guide my own heart on this emotional journey of the heart and soul. That ending. Those letters. The epilogue. The Surrogate owns a piece of my heart. Chef's kiss Penelope!
